Varsity Nine and MK Dons Launch THE Next Wave Championship to Create New Pathway into Senior Football
Nine founding teams to compete in a new U16-U21 development competition, culminating in the inaugural Grand Final at Stadium MK in May 2027.
Varsity Nine today announces the launch of the Next Wave Championship, a new competition established by the two organisations to give talented emerging footballers the high-level matches, meaningful minutes and credible exposure needed to take the next step towards senior football.
The inaugural 2026/27 season begins on Tuesday 11 August, when Swindon Town host MK Dons in the Championship’s opening fixture.
Established by Varsity Nine and MK Dons, the Next Wave Championship has been built around a clear purpose: to create a competitive bridge into senior professional football.
The Championship brings together nine founding teams from across the professional game, academy football and alternative player-development pathways, creating a new environment where emerging players can test themselves in meaningful competitive fixtures throughout an entire season.

Together, the nine teams provide a distinctive combination of established professional academy structures, senior football environments and alternative development pathways.

The transition from academy football into the senior game is one of the most challenging stages of a player’s career. Talent alone is rarely enough. Players need competitive minutes, challenging opposition and opportunities to demonstrate their ability in environments that move them closer to senior football.
The Next Wave Championship has been created specifically to provide that platform.
The competition is primarily designed around U16-U21 player development, with clubs able to select players across those age groups according to individual development needs. Each matchday squad may also include one over-age goalkeeper and up to three over-age outfield players, providing additional flexibility for development, return-to-play programmes and senior pathway opportunities.
Each team will play the other eight entrants twice, home and away, creating 16 league fixtures per club and 72 matches across the regular season. The competition will use the traditional three-points-for-a-win and one-point-for-a-draw system, while flexible fixture periods allow clubs to schedule matches around their existing academy, league and cup commitments.
At the end of the regular season, the leading teams will progress to the Next Wave Championship Play-Offs, culminating in the inaugural Grand Final at Stadium MK in May 2027.
The founding teams represent a broad range of football environments. MK Dons and Bromley enter following promotion to League One, alongside established professional academy environments at Luton Town and Oxford United. Swindon Town bring their Football League tradition, while Southend United and Billericay Town provide exposure to National League and National League South football.
Pro:Direct XI brings together standout players from across Pro Direct’s nationwide football and education network, while Varsity Nine enters with ambitious young players pursuing pathways into professional football and leading US college programmes.
A key part of the Championship will be creating stronger evidence around player performance. Matches will be prepared for full-game recording, supported by accurate team sheets and player information, helping create a centralised environment for video, data and scouting. By providing greater context around full competitive performances, the Championship will help coaches, scouts and recruitment teams make better-informed decisions. For players, it creates another credible opportunity to be seen. For clubs, it provides another environment to assess development and identify talent.
